Today marks the official bicentennial of Father Hidalgo’s call-to-arms and the start of the Mexican Independence movement, but the major celebrations happened last night in Mexico City and beyond.

The BBC has photos here, while El Universal has a number of different photo galleries, including this one of the culmination of last night’s celebration in the Zocalo

Closer to home, Chicago held its own celebrations in Millennium Park, with mariachi, ballet folklorico, classical music, and more–as well as quite a collection of Mexico-themed shirts, jackets, ponchos, capes, sombreros and wrestling masks in the crowd.  Battling a nasty cold, I didn’t last long enough to hear El Grito–the traditional “shout” led by a dignitary based on Father Hidaldo’s speech on the steps of the church of Dolores–but the parts of the program I did see were well done and well attended.

Annie and I at the game

Almost as exciting as the game:  learning that Victoria beer is now sold in the United States.

A short return

I recently spent a little over a week in Mexico as the first leg of a “visit as many friends as possible in a short period of time” trip.

The week in numbers:

1 – number of Pumas games attended; number of Japanese novels printed in Spanish purchased

2 – number of consecutive Super Bowls watched south of the border; number of bacon wrapped hot dogs consumed at 5 am

3 – number of days spent lamenting the rain in Guanajuato; number of Pumas jerseys I now own

5 – number of nights spent in DF; approximate AM arrival time to Garibaldi one of those nights

10 – number of songs requested of the mariachi at Plaza Garibaldi; number of times making tea while avoiding the rain in Guanajuato for lack of anything else to do.

many – number of tacos consumed; number of times I asked myself why I’m not still living in Mexico

All in all, a good but far too short trip in which I largely forgot to take any photos (will retroactively post the few I took).  Not sure when the next return trip will be, but given the number of times I promised people that I’d be back, it should probably be soon.

Too much going on to really put together a good coherent post, so for now more just a stream-of-conciousness mish-mash…

Goya!  Goya!

Never flying Continental again.  I actually swore them off once already but somehow ended up taking them home yesterday.  Random extra charges, big delay, crappy service, and having to fly through IAH… not a fun travel day.

Still dunno how we survived the my Final Cantina Friday.  At least the pictures turned out awesome; let me know if you need any of these taken down for fear of never getting a job if these are found…

I miss everyone already.

One thing I can’t complain about:  The amazing view of Lake Michigan I have out of my window right now.

Finally, the winner of the (possibly hijacked by unnamed gringo ninja) photo contest.  Apparently humor trumps artsy-ness:

"What do you mean HE'S NOT MINE, Mary?!"

"What do you mean HE'S NOT MINE, Mary?!"

More to come when I have time to sit down and put more coherent thoughts together.

My last day in Mexico happens to coincide with the final game of the soccer season, and my team is heading into the game with a 1-0 goal advantage.  While I can’t be at the stadium in Pachuca to cheer them on, I can at least give them an e-Goya:

Goya! Goya! Chachuncachun rah rah! Cachuncachun rah rah! Goya! Universidad!

Goya! Goya! Chachuncachun rah rah! Cachuncachun rah rah! Goya! Universidad!
