Guisados in the martketplace
Some of the best food in Mexico City is found in Xochimilco. This is not particularly surprising as the area’s chinampas (man-made island gardens) have helped to feed the capital since Aztec times.
It took me 2.5 hours to reach a clinic today (and another 2.5 hours to return), and didn’t even enter into the northern 2/3rds of the city…
On the plus side, I did get to look around a fair dedicated to amaranto, a seed used as the base of a traditional Mexican candy named alegría (literally, “joy”). The economy of the entire village (now an extension of Mexico City) has traditionally been based on the production of these sweets.

The Trajineras of Xochimilco
Mexico City’s “gondolas” through the canals of Xochimilco serve 2 primary purposes. One is basic transport of goods and people from the numerous nurseries and greenhouses built along the banks of the canals. The second use–these days much more common–is to function as a floating party decks for tourists and locals alike, complete with drink, food, and mariachi boats to keep the fiesta rolling.
